- First release from Hamburg based producer Phokus, who throws down
two unbeatable tracks with South London grime pioneers Ruff Sqwad's Dirty
Danger and Tinchy Stryder.

The latest release from central Europe's prime dubstep/grime imprint MG77 is
the blistering debut 12" from Hamburg's finest, Phokus; a producer who cut
his teeth on the burgeoning Drum 'n Bass scene before discovering grime and
dubstep and seeing his true calling. It's obvious from the first squelch of
synthesizer that the kid has styles unmatched in the scene - this is heavy
hitting music, designed for maximum impact and with hooks that are destined
to stay in your head for far too long. Phokus is joined on these two
destructive tracks by Ruff Sqwad veterans Dirty Danger and Tinchy Stryder
(rumoured to have recently signed with a major!) who spit the most dangerous
rhymes we've heard for a long time. Tinchy's cut 'Dem All Shot' is a
neck-grabbing ride into South London's underbelly, with all the attitude
you'd expect to come with it. Carried by Phokus's killer icy-cold production
this is a tune guaranteed to tear up dancefloors from Brixton to Berlin and
beyond. Flip over for the real sickness though, an anthem to Dirty Danger
himself as he asserts to nay-sayers that they shouldn't call him anything
but "Danger" - as if we'd dare? Destined to be a scene anthem this rounds up
a perfect 12", and one of the heaviest debuts we've heard in years.

CM>>>"Bass the World" ist in dem Sinne keine gewöhnliche Compilation. Zum einem sind Tracks von Dir darauf, aber auch seltene, ja zum Teil gar nicht mehr erhältliche Tracks und Dubplates. Wie kam es dazu eine solche "Compilation" zusammen zu stellen?

Frederic>>>Ich hatte zuerst mit Oliver von Mental Groove geplant eine LP nur mit meinen Stücken zu veröffentlichen. 2003 war ich sehr oft in London und dort fing ich an die Whitelabels über irgendwelche Katalognummern die eingeritzt sind, ausfindig zu machen. So enstand zufällig die Idee kein reines DJ Maxxiumuss Album zu produzieren, sondern Artists mit ähnlichem... besser gesagt mit dem Sound der aus dem UK Garage enstanden ist mit auf das Album zu nehmen. Es sollten vor allen Dingen Stücke sein die ich sehr mag und die eben nur in geringer Auflage erschienen sind.

CM>>>War das somit auch der Start für das Sublabel MG77; Ist MG77sozusagen dein Kind?

Frederic>>>(lacht) Ich mache das schon mit Oliver von Mental Groove, aber ich mache die Tätigkeit eines A+R bei diesem Label. Wir hatten auf MG77 schon zuvor zwei 12“inches rausgebracht, aber es ist so, dass jetzt durch "Bass the World" die Leute richtig auf MG77 aufmerksam geworden sind und hoffentlich noch mehr dazu kommen werden.

CM>>> War das nicht ein riesiger Zeitaufwand "Bass the World" zusammen zu stellen? Die Rechtliche Seite abzuklären, sowie die "Bänder" zu bekommen? Ich stelle mir die ganze Geschichte sehr aufwendig vor.

Frederic>>>Ja schon, im Ganzen habe ich zwei Jahre Arbeit reingesteckt.

CM>>>Gab es denn auch Labels oder Artists die keine Lust auf das Projekt hatten?

Frederic>>>Insgsamt drei Leute, ein Majorlabel und zwei Artists. Zum Beispiel bei "The Beats": das ist ein Sideproject von Mike Skinner das auf Locked On veröffentlicht wurde. Da war es so. Aber sonst sind wir nicht auf Ablehnung gestossen, eher im Gegenteil. Es sind viele gute Leute dabei, z.B Jon E Cash. Die haben uns mit noch viel mehr Material beliefert als am Anfang abgesprochen war.

CM>>>Kann man "Bass the World" als dein persönliches Mixtape bezeichenen?

Frederic>>>Ja kann man schon sagen, eigentlich eine Bezeichnung die mir sehr gut gefällt.

CM>>>Die schlimmste Frage überhaupt: Kann man „Bass the World“ in eine bestimmte Musikrichtung einordnen? Grime, Twostep Garage?

Frederic>>>Ich glaube es definiert sich selbst schon mal durch den Namen "Bass the World". Der Name reflektiert meiner Meinung nach die Musik. Um die Frage zu beantworten "woher es kommt"; Grime ist ja die Bezeichnung die seit 2004 durch die Medien geistert, aber ich denke man kann es schon in diese Schublade stecken.

CM>>>Gut dann oute ich mich mal: Kannst Du mir Grime definieren? Ich habe nämlich noch keine echte Definition dafür gefunden.

Frederic>>>(lacht) Gerne, der Name Grime hat mit der schmutzigen Art der Produktionsweise zu tun. Kids zwischen 16-19 die mit dem Programm ‚Fruity Loops’ total minimalistische und futuristische Musik produziert haben - die in die Subkategorien wie Dubstep, Sublow oder Fourfour einzuordnen ist - haben im Grunde diesen Style begründet. Um dieses Szene, zum grössten Teil Schlafzimmerproducer, und deren Sound unter einen Hut zu bekommen kam ca. 2004 das Wort "Grime" auf. Heißt aber auch, dass Grime eine Menge Subkategorien hat.
Die Art wie es zusammen gesetzt ist ist was völlig Neues, und gleichzeitig ist es sehr "naiv" in der Art des Arrangments. Man merkt schon, dass es sehr junge Leute sind die gar nicht so einen erfahrenen Musikgeschmack haben oder in der Musikgeschichte nicht so firm sind. Die nehmen etwas und verändern es und kreieren dadurch etwas was für uns Neu klingt.

CM>>>Naivität hilft ja auch unverkrampft etwas Frisches zu schaffen..

Frederic>>>Ja, ganz richtig. Was ich auch damit meine "dass es nicht wirklich Neues ist". 1996-1997 haben wir als Fever, das waren Paul PM, der heute die Puppetmastaz macht, und ich auf DHR eine LP rausgebracht, die dem was heute Grime genannt wird schon sehr nahe kommt. Auf Discogs haben ein paar Leute dazu angemerkt, dass, wenn wir diese Platte nicht auf Warp rausgebracht hätten, man uns durchaus als die Forfathers of Grime bezeichnen könnte. Ohne, dass der Begriff Grime da schon etabliert war, sondern einfach weil der Sound so dreckig war, und das zu einer Zeit als alles noch eher Two-Step mäßig fröhlich war, eher aus dem House-Kontext.

CM>>>Schmeichelt es Dir wenn Leute so über dich schreiben bzw. denken?

Frederic>>>In einer gewissen Art schon, aber ich bilde mir da auch nichts drauf ein (lacht). Wichtig ist es mir auch, dass die Leute MG77 als Label für Basskultur und Urbanität verstehen und nicht als das Grimelabel das von mir mit aus der Taufe gehoben worden ist um jetzt mit diesem Hype mitzuschwimmen.

CM>>>Apropos was bedeutet die 77 im Labelnamen MG77?

Frederic>>>Klar MG für Mental Groove und 77 weil ich in dem Jahr geboren bin und ich die Zahl im Labelnamen drinhaben wollte.

CM>>>Moment du hast 1991 angefangen in die Musik einzusteigen, also mit vierzehn Jahren?

Frederic>>>(lacht) Ja das war einfach so und hat sich so entwickelt. Ich bin auch sehr glücklich, dass die Dinge sich so in meinem Leben entwickelt haben und auch noch weiter entwickeln.

CM>>>Von DHR, Tresor experimentellen Trechno bis heute, hast du schon sehr viele unterschiedliche Arten von Musik gemacht. Suche oder Entwicklung?

Frederic>>>Ich würde sagen, der Drang sich weiter zu entwickeln. Ausser deutschen Hip Hop und Schlager kann ich mir eigentlich vorstellen alles zu machen. Wenn es gute Musik ist, gibt es für mich keine Grenzen.

CM>>>Wie bist du damals mit der elektronischen Musik in Berührung gekommen? Durch Freunde, einen älteren Bruder ?

Frederic>>>Ich war mit Zwölf mit Freunden auf meinem ersten Public Enemy Konzert in Bonn in der Biskuithalle. Das war mein allererstes Konzert überhaupt.

CM>>>>Du arbeitest auch unter dem Namen DIN-ST?

Frederic>>>Ja, da hatte ich letztes Jahr mein erstes Soloalbum auf Schematic einem Label in Miami veröffentlicht. DIN-ST deckt aber eher den Hip Hop Produzenten bis hin zum Breakbeatgewitter ab, wobei DJ Maxximus eher einen englischen Sound hat.

CM>>>Nimmst du dir auch Auszeiten zwischen all deiner Arbeit?

Frederic>>>Ja, auf jeden Fall, wenn ich zum Beispiel in Israel auftrete, dann bleibe ich auch eine Woche um auszuspannen, das Land anzuschauen - und die Leute sind dort supernett.

CM>>>Du hast mir die Frage vorweggenommen. Wie ist es in Israel aufzutreten?

Frederic>>>Isra-hell, (lacht) ja sehr offene Leute. Ich dachte immer Japan wäre das offenste Land und von der Crowd her das euphorischste, so wie ich es auch selbst erfahren habe. Aber Israel hat letztes Jahr alles getopt. Nicht, dass in Japan alle auf Drogen waren, aber in Israel wurde etwas getrunken und die Musik gefeiert, ohne Drogen. Hier in Europa ist die elektronische Musik auch sehr oft im Kontext zu Drogenkonsum. Deshalb bin ich dieses Jahr wieder nach Israel und die Leute waren wieder so offen und es gab wieder eine sehr gute Resonanz.

CM>>>Bekommt man etwas von der bedrohlichen Situation im Land mit? Wie ist das Land an sich? Gefällt es dir?

Frederic>>>Ja, wenn man seine Falaffel essen geht und neben dir jemand mit der M16 steht, dann merkt man wo man ist. Oder wenn man am Toten Meer ist und über dir zwei F16 Bomber vorbeidonnern, dann weiß man, dass auf der anderen Seite Jordanien ist und wie angespannt die Situation ist. Oder zum Beispiel mit dem Bus zu fahren ist schon sehr beklemmend. Auf der anderen Seite ist Tel Aviv eine wunderschöne Stadt, zu 70% Bauhaus, wird auch die weiße Stadt genannt... Wahnsinn fast eine komplette Stadt im Bauhaus Stil gemischt mit arabischen Einflüssen.

CM>>>Noch einmal zum Album....

Frederic>… du kannst es auch Mixtape nennen ... (lachend)

CM>>>Das "Bass the World" Mixtape, wird es nun in irgend einer Form Live präsentiert. Legst du die Titel so auf?

Frederic>>>Also wenn ich auflege, ist es immer so, dass ich kein festes Set habe, ich habe eine Bandbreite an Platten. Aber die sind nicht mit BPM beschriftet oder in Reihenfolge sortiert. Aber viele Tracks von "Bass the World" sind essentielle Stücke meiner Sets die ich immer dabei habe. Hier in Berlin spiele ich die Platten natürlich nicht zum Zehnten Mal, aber, wenn ich unterwegs bin ist es unglaublich was ich an Reaktionen darauf bekomme. Aber eine spezielle Tour für das Mixtape gibt es nicht. Kommt noch dazu das ich auch keine Booking Agentur habe, aber es kommt wie es kommt (lacht) wie schon die letzten zehn Jahre.

CM>>>War es auch ein besonderer Reiz als du "Bass the World" zusammen gestellt hast, Major- und Underground-Label zu vermischen oder war dies wegen der Musik zweitrangig?

Frederic>>>Im Vordergrund stand vor allem die Musik, weil ich sie eben so gut finde. Es gab aber im gewissen Sinne schon den Anreiz als erstes Europäisches Label - England ausgenommen - diese Art der Musik einer größeren Bandbreite an Menschen zugänglich macht.

CM>>>Wo hast du Soom T kennen gelernt und wie kam es zu eurer Zusammenarbeit?

Frederic>>>Ich machte einen Remix für ein Stück von ihr von einem anderen Produzenten hier in Berlin und habe sie dann auch kurz danach persönlich kennengelernt. Ich gab ihr dann ein paar DJ Maxximus Tracks und sie gefielen ihr gut. So denke ich ist es dazu gekommen, dass ich die letzten drei Monate ihr Soloalbum produziert habe.

CM>>>Ist der Bass für dich untentbehrlich um Musik zu erleben. Woher kommt der Titel?

Frederic>>>Es hat viel mit der Basskultur zu tun, von Dub bis zu Drum And Bass. Ich war 1993 in London auf einer Dub Soundnight. Dort waren 3000 Leute, du kommst rein, gingst drei Stufen runter und warst direkt auf dem Dancefloor in dieser riesigen Halle. Es war Chashaka (?) der mit seinem eigenen selbstentwickelten Soundsystem arbeitet und mit nur einem Plattenspieler auflegt. Man konnte die Luft da drin schneiden und dieser Bass den ich da erlebt habe, das war Hardcore.(lachend). Das erste mal im Leben wirklich Hardcore, ich bin vorher schon in Deutschland auf Drum and Bass Partys gewesen, aber das konnte man damit nicht vergleichen. Dieses Erlebnis hat mich sehr beeinflusst.

CM>>>Was passiert jetzt als nächstes?

Frederic>>>Zum einem werden jetzt Tracks von "Bass the World" als 12"inch veröffentlicht, dann sind noch zwei weitere Artists bei MG 77 dazu gekommen. Aber der nächste große Release ist wie gesagt Soom T. Ich denke das Album kommt im März/April raus. Es sind sehr viele Gäste mit auf dem Album, ich kann dir noch nicht alle verraten, aber zum Beispiel ist Paris The Black Fu und Jamie Lidell ist mit dabei. Eine ziemllich runde Sache.

CM>>>Was brauchst du für einen perfekten Tag?

Frederic>>>Good Question....(lange Pause)..vor dem perfekten Tag kommt die perfekte Nacht.

Tinchy Stryder and Dirty Danger on "DEM ALL SHOT" & "DANGER "
TWO TRAXX WHICH LET UR SUBMARINE SINK ,
PRODUCED BY PHOKUS COMMING UP THIS SPRING ON MG77 RECORDINGS !

For those who haven´t heard about Tinchy Stryder here some nice words originally uploaded by chantelle fiddy.

He may look young enough to be Wiley’s love child, but in grime terms, Tinchy Stryder is nearing veteran status. Dip into the Sidewinder DVD archives, and you’ll find classic footage of Dizzee Rascal and newcomer MC Tinchy Stryder, holding the stage, mic and audience to ransom. Back in the early 00’s rumour had it dinky Stryder, with his trademark lyric ‘let me see the gun finger’, was only 12 years old. Not true. But his Oil of Olay (shower) face has continued to serve him well.

“Yeah, yeah, yeah, people still think I’m a kid but really I turned nineteen the other week… I’m driving a Rover now.” Stryder states, nonchalantly. Standing at a respectable ( and estimated) 5ft 5, you can be forgiven for pondering, however briefly, Stryders ability to see over the wheel, or the rate at which the feds might be routinely checking him given his Home Alone meets Different Strokes cheeky-charm. “I got tints innit so man can’t see in.” Stop and search procedures aside, he doesn’t care for smoking so at least there’s no worrying about getting asked i.d for fags.

Scribing lyrics and building hits with his east London based Ruff Squad family. Tinchy and co have been rising to prominence in underground circles since 2002. Playground anthems like ‘Tings In Boots’, mistaken by many as a reference to ladies in fuck me knee-highs (more romantically it related to stashing weapons), ‘Anna’, ‘Down’ (not going south on girls either, come on that’s just like soooo wrong), and the mixtape series Guns & Roses. Despite other talent in the crew, namely producers Rapid and Slicks, it’s Stryder that’s become the synonymous member, partially thanks, yet again, to Eski Godfather Wiley pulling him through the trenches. Cameo’s on remixes such as Mike Skinner’s ‘Fit But U Know It’ and Brucker & Sinden’s remix of Sovereign’s ‘Hoodie’, haven’t gone unnoticed by the trend spotter muso’s either.

“I think ‘Underground’ is the best thing I’ve done, I can listen to it anytime, anywhere. Actually thinking about it the only thing I can never listen to is rock. Everything else is getting downloaded though.”

When not getting his Limewire on or flicking through Max Power at his local newsagents, Tinchy can be found looking for management, juggling overseas bookings, the next stop being Sweden, and putting the finishing touches to Guns & Roses 2 (which he promises will boast more original UK production than the debut).

“Yeah, It’s mostly Ruff Squad beats, more like an album. But it’s not an album. That will come next year. I can’t tell you what we sound like cause I don’t know. We’re unique and I’m well… unique.”

My mate whos Japan's most promising young directors , Toshiaki Toyoda, was arrested after cops raided his house and found "five packets of stimulants". I'm not sure what those are. Coke? Speed? Nutrasweet? Anyways, Director Toyoda has been held in custody and his newest film, HANGING GARDEN, which was supposed to be released in October has had its release date moved to some unspecified future date. TOYODA says the drugs were for personal use only but it doesn't matter, he was facing jail time.

SO HAD TO PLUG THE LABT. IN A NEW SET UP,TOTALY SOMEPLACE ELSE THAN DURING THE SOUNDCHECK,SO THE SOUND WHEN I STARTED WAS WECK BULLSHIT,SO I PULL UP DA FADER,AND THIS COKED UP SOUNDBOY ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ROOM ,PULLED MY LEVEL DOWN AND STARTING TALKING WITH A MIC TO ME :" BOY ! YOU BURNING DOWN MY SOUNDSYSTEM"
I SCREEMED BACK " YO !! U SEE I CAN PUT IT DOWN" ,TROW A SMALL WATER BOTTLW (WOW SO BERLIN PUNK A ALIKE)AND SHOWED HIM MY ARSE,THE SHOW WAS FINISHED ,NOONE THERE ANYMORE EXEPT THE ARTIST OF THAT NIGHT,THAN 2 MIN. LATER 3 BLACK BIG BOUNCERS GRABED MY ASS AND SWINGED ME OUTTA THE CLUB WITH A BIG TRÄ TÄ.AFTER THAT NOT JUST MY SET WAS OVER ,THE PARTY WAS OVER.

the reason why i start with this first post in this blog in 2000 ,is because ,2000 was the time i was getting into uk garage,
throu´ Lady C. who lived in London that time ,i´ve gotten tapes of her with lots of London Pirates .
Dj Scud was comming over to Berlin in the same summer ,so i ve asked him to bring us (Something J) more ukgarage tunes.
In Germany that time TV stations started to report about "2-step", protracted to get hyped in 2001 ,more and more.
But that what they´ve presented was like a bad version of Labello Blanco in 4+4.Anyway,i was total hooked by what i was hearing on the tapes of Lady C.. and Dj Scud.

So i try to fill up this blog till Real time ,yo i see with me ,like the benches on Hampstead Heath.

DHR ended that year for all of us suddently ,because Alec was geting more and more insane and the rest is History.
